The Ministry of Transport has decided to add Gia Binh International Airport, Bac Ninh province, to the National Airport System Plan for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision towards 2050.

The Ministry of Transport has issued a decision approving the adjustment of the master plan for the development of the national airport and airfield system for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision towards 2050.

According to this decision, Gia Binh International Airport (Bac Ninh) has been officially added to the national airport system plan, marking a significant phase in the development of aviation infrastructure in northern Vietnam.

Gia Binh International Airport is classified as a 4E-level airport, located in Bac Ninh province, with an estimated land area of approximately 363.5 hectares. By 2030, the projected design capacity is around 1 million passengers per year, with a long-term vision of 3 million passengers per year by 2050.

Developing a Comprehensive Transportation Network in Bac Ninh and the Capital Region

The planning of Gia Binh Airport aligns with Vietnam’s air transport development strategy, ensuring close integration with the infrastructure system of the Capital Region, facilitating transportation and trade connections.

Gia Binh Airport will be directly connected to the center of Hanoi via a 50-km-long, 120-meter-wide route, ensuring smooth traffic flow between Bac Ninh and the capital. Additionally, it will be integrated with key transport routes such as Ring Road 3, National Highway 5, and the Giang Bien - Vinh Tuy - Ring Road 2 connection, enhancing interregional connectivity.

To further modernize the transportation network, authorities are also proposing research into constructing a metro rail line linking Gia Binh Airport with central Hanoi. This would optimize passenger and cargo transport, improve airport operation efficiency, and enhance regional logistics capabilities.

Boosting Socioeconomic Development and Investment Attraction

Incorporating Gia Binh Airport into the national airport system not only expands Bac Ninh’s trade and business partnerships but also creates a strategic advantage in attracting investment, enhancing competitiveness, and driving sustainable economic growth.

Gia Binh Airport will help relieve pressure on Noi Bai Airport, handling part of the passenger and cargo transport demand while supporting import-export activities of businesses in Bac Ninh, Bac Giang, and Thai Nguyen.

The upgrade of Gia Binh into an international airport is expected to accelerate e-commerce, cargo transportation, and the development of logistics hubs serving supply chains in northern Vietnam.

With modern infrastructure and advanced aviation connectivity, Bac Ninh is set to become an even more attractive destination for high-quality FDI, especially in electronics, high-tech industries, and export manufacturing, solidifying its position as a strategic production and logistics center in northern Vietnam.
